My Quick Trip to Split, Croatia

For the last few days I was enjoying the sunshine in beautiful Split, Croatia. It was wonderful, relaxing, and interesting to see a new country. I landed on monday night, after a long and frustrating experience in the Rome airport…As I said in my last blog post, coffee is the key to get through Italian anything…and I had not had enough. It wasn’t that bad though…it only took 5 hours from door to gate. It’s probably a good thing Case did not join me for this trip…he just LOVES how calm I stay while dealing with airports and flying 🙂 Anyway I arrived in Croatia and was at my hotel within 30 minutes..it was smooth sailing from then on.

I stayed in a very small Inn in the middle of the Diocletian Palace, the Inn was cozy and palace was impressive! My Inn was just a few steps from the bell tower and cathedral within the walls of the palace. Below are some pictures I took of the bell tower and inside of the walls.

Most of my nights in Split were spent wandering in and out of the small shops within the palace and finding a spot to eat my dinner for the night. One evening after the beach I wandered into a quaint little wine bar, sat at the bar and learned about the wines from the incredibly knowledgable bar tender.  I decided my favorite wine of the night was the Posip, which was a tasty light white, and very refreshing.

My first full day in Croatia I hit the ground running, it seemed Croatians are similar to Italians, so when I was out and about at eight AM– I had the place to myself. My first stop was the beautifful Marjan, which is a park overlooking the city of Split. I started out on foot, then ran into a bike rental, and from there wandered around on two wheels. Below is a picture I took from up on the hill, looking back at Split, just one of the many views!

After a few hours of biking, I decided I derserved some beach time. So I wandered to the closest beach, got a nice large lounge chair for 20 kuna and spent the next few hours of my afternoon looking out on the beautiful green and blue water.

After taking in the beach for a few hours I wandered back into town to climb the bell tower. I have walked up my fair share of duomos, bell towers, tall building etc. while in Europe, but this one by far was the one that made my heart race…not because of difficulty, just due to the lack of railings! At several points I had to squeeze by people who were having a minor panic attack on their way up, I found myself laughing just imagining Case walking up the tower—he would have absolutely hated it! Here is a view of me looking up the stairs:

Once I made it to the top, the view was amazing, well worth the climb (pictured above).
After doing my best to see as much as I could of Split in one day, I decided the next day to take a ferry over to the Island of Brac, and wander around the city of Superta. Again another beautiful town, much more quiet then Split and the perfect spot to relax.
Here are some pictures from Superta:

Above: The first picture is of the cathedral in the main square. The second picture shows the beach I spent my afternoon on..as you can see it was a pretty stressful day 🙂

Sadly my trip came to an end, and it was time to head back to Rome…but I guess that’s not an awful spot to call home! This weekend we head to Naples…another one of my favorites!

Until next time! Ciao Ciao Ciao!
